Many people are trying the various fitness video programs, cross fit routines and boot camps out there, but get confused as to how and why certain exercises are put together.  By following some of these strict routines, it’s hard to customize the exercises to your own fitness level, and many people get frustrated and give up, or worse, get injured.  So, let’s talk about how you can achieve the same level of fitness by customizing your own workout. 

First of all getting fit depends always on YOU!  Buying a DVD, registering for classes and buying healthy frozen meals are not going to get you fit alone.  Knowledge is power and empowering yourself to create a program you want to follow is key.  A tailored exercise program just like a tailored diet is the means to your end of getting fit.  It has to be a smart program, but also one that you will actually follow!

So, how do you choose exercises and more important how do you combine them effectively?  If you are going to work out three or days a week using a crossfit or circuit training regimen that’s a good start.  Now you have to choose exercises to do each of those 3 days.  We tailor our exercises around people who want to get fit without having to spend a lot of money or buy a lot of equipment.  We also recommend exercises that can be done anywhere; right in your back yard, in a gym, or somewhere you want to meet with friends to work out together.  A circuit should last no more than 30 minutes max.  The exercises should complement each other and work to raise your heart rate and keep it in the proper zone the entire time you are exercising.  This is how you are going to burn the most fat.   Also, the routine should work the entire body on all plains of movement (up/down, side/side, forward/back).  The more muscle groups you can work in one exercise, or the more dynamic it is, again, the more you are going to burn and tone.  More muscles firing, means more calories being burned!

Let’s look at a sample routine that accomplishes this and can be done at your house with minimal equipment.  With this circuit, you would do each exercise for a set time.  You want to have each station set up so you can quickly change from one exercise to the next, keeping your heart rate up.  As an example, we would do each exercise for 30 seconds, and give ourselves 10 seconds to switch exercises, and for a quick recovery.  After you finish a full circuit, depending on your fitness level, you can stop there, or go straight into a short jog (1/4 mile) and then start round two of the same circuit when you get back.  When just starting one circuit may be enough for you, but as you get more FreakinFit you can work towards being able to do 3 circuits, with a short jog in between each round.  Here’s an example of one of our circuits:

This is all about you choosing what works for you at your fitness level.  That’s the great thing about doing a circuit.  You can choose the exercises that work for you, and as you get more fit, you can choose harder exercises, or the different exercise progressions.  Fitness videos and boot camps are not tailored to your needs. And, what they rely upon is your lack of knowledge and your inability to formulate your own exercise routine.
