As with all things, there is a right way to go about working for a flatter midsection, and several wrong ways. Working out the wrong way can lead to no physical improvement or worse, serious injury. When doing stomach exercises or any other exercise, be sure to consult a professional, warm up properly, and remember the following tips.

Keep Your Knees Up
When doing crunches, you want your knees to bent and your feet flat on the floor so that your knees are centered and pointed upward. Keep them centered and up, not to one side. If you drop your knees to one side, you are unnecessarily compressing your vertebrae, which can lead to a painful back injury.

Sit-Ups
Traditional sit-ups actually do very little for the abdominal muscles. Even when done properly, the strain is mostly on the hip muscles. There is also the tendency to pull the torso up with the arms, which of course is not the point of the exercise. Further, when sit-ups are done very quickly, as people have a tendency to do, it is momentum that mostly forces the torso up and down, rather than any muscle groups. The crunch is a good alternative to old school sit-ups.

Straight Leg Lift
Another traditional “stomach exercise,” this move actually works the lower back more than any muscles in the midsection. This is also another way to put strain on your back, possibly leading to injury.

Too Many Reps
There is never a need to do more fifty reps of a stomach exercise. If fifty reps is not giving you results, doing more than that will not help wither. As you build strength, if you feel the need for a bigger challenge, try a more difficult exercise as an alternative to adding reps.

Sleeping
Believe it or not, how you sleep has an effect on your stomach exercise routine. If you sleep in a position that cause back pain, it will make it much more difficult to work on your midsection in the morning. Sleeping mostly on your stomach is one of the best ways to cause back pain, as it forces your back to arch, often resulting in annoying back pain. The best way to avoid this is to sleep on your back with a pillow under your knees. This will help keep your vertebrae in line, prevent back pain and allowing you work out pain free in the morning.

No Resistance
All stomach exercises need resistance to be effective, whether it comes from a resistance band, an exercise ball, or just gravity. Exercises that do not use any resistance, such as standing broomstick twists, will not be beneficial to your midsection. The good news is that this particular exercise will not do any harm and is actually a good warm up for your trunk. Just do not expect it to flatten out your stomach.

Proper exercise technique is important. These are just a few tips to help you avoid wasting time and potential injury. Be sure to research thoroughly before beginning a new exercise, and always consult your physician before beginning any physical fitness routine.

Does ‘dieting’ actually help you to lose belly fat and reduce and eliminate the excessive weight that has accumulated on your body over the years? The question actually has 2 parts and this is what I share with people I speak with.

First of all, what is belly fat?

Belly fat is a condition of deep visceral fat that only shows a little on the surface what it is really up to deeper inside your body.

Fat in the abdomen -or central weight gain, is more harmful to you then subcutaneous fat that accumulates on your thigh’s or arms, etc. The deeper tissue fat is actually invading your peritoneal cavity (where your organs lie) and surrounds and inhibits the function of many major organs beginning often with the liver. This is NOT good.

The Tip Of The Ice Berg!

A short list of preventable ailments that have been linked directly to being overweight, meaning our diet and lifestyle, looks like this:

Arthritis

  …just to name a few.

This visceral fat – that is fat that you don’t see inside your belly, is an indicator that you are suffering from a condition of insulin resistance. Everybody wants a toned and flat stomach, but not everybody has the discipline and determination to obtain one. Let’s face it: You cannot get an instant abs by just sitting around and eating junk foods all day. You have to move your body and cut back on fatty foods. It may take a lot of hard work, but the rewards will be worth it. You can start your journey to model-like abs with the following flat stomach exercise routines.

The first kind of flat stomach exercise is the basic crunch. The basic crunch works out the muscles in the upper abdomen. Start this exercise by lying with your back against the floor or exercise mat. Put your hands on the back of your head or cross them in front of your chest. Bend your knees so that it forms a 90 degree angle with your feet. With this position, lift your upper body closer to your knees as if touching them. Do this while keeping your feet in place and using your abdominal muscles to lift your upper body. Then slowly return to your original position. Repeat this around 15-30 times. After doing this exercise, you can feel pain in the upper abdomen. Do not worry because this is a sign that the exercise is working.

The second is the reverse crunch which is a flat stomach exercise that works out the lower abdomen. Start this exercise by lying flat on the floor or exercise mat and place your hands near your hips. Then slowly lift your legs with slightly bent knees around six inches above the floor as if touching the chest. By this time, you will feel pressure in the lower abdomen. After this, slowly lower your legs back to the floor. Repeat this 15-30 times.

The third is the oblique crunch which works out the sides of the stomach. Start this exercise by lying against on the floor. Place right foot flat on the floor with right knee bent forming a 90 degree angle with the foot. Then put left foot on top of right knee and place hands on the back of the head. From this position, bring your right shoulder closer to your left knee while contracting the sides of the abdomen in the process. Then, slowly go back to the original position. After 15-30 repetitions, switch sides and bring left shoulder this time to the raised right knee. Repeat this for another 15-30 times.

No matter how much abdominal exercises you do per day, the results will not show if you have layers of fats covering your stomach. Therefore, it is important to shed off these fats through cardiovascular exercises or aerobic exercises. These types of exercise must be done for at least 30 minutes per day. Some common examples of cardiovascular exercises include running, cycling, brisk walking, dancing, swimming or any activity that can help you sweat and keep your heart rate up.
